# Sanctum

> Sanctum is a local-first Chrome extension for intentional YouTube use. It adds optional checkpoints around recommendation-driven browsing, autoplay, and repeated Shorts swipes so people can notice when they have drifted from their starting intent and choose what happens next.

## What Sanctum is for

Sanctum is for people who want to keep the useful parts of YouTube while making recommendation loops easier to notice. It is designed around user choice rather than forced blocking, shame, scoring, or external behavioral tracking.

## How it works

- The Chrome extension can place optional checkpoints around YouTube home recommendations, related recommendations while watching, autoplay, and repeated Shorts swipes.
- Search, subscriptions, direct links, and videos the user deliberately chooses remain available.
- A checkpoint can help the user return to the original intent, continue, or step away. The product does not treat one of those choices as morally superior.
- Interventions can be skipped, adjusted, or turned off.

## Privacy

- No account is required for the Chrome extension.
- Core intention, attention, and session records stay on the user's device by default.
- Sanctum does not add advertising trackers or external behavioral analytics to the product.
- Data leaves the device only when the user deliberately chooses an action such as feedback or export.

## Product availability

- Chrome Extension: available. This is the current public product for YouTube surface interventions.
- Desktop: in development. Its feature set differs from Chrome and it does not automatically sync with Chrome.
- Mobile: in development. It does not currently intervene on YouTube surfaces and it does not automatically sync with Chrome.
